How they test products on animals!

The cosmetic industry uses four basic tests on animals.

  1. The first test is for eye irritations, or Draize test, in which shampoos and cosmetics are put into rabbit’s eyes, which are fastened, open. The chemical causes blistering, swelling and blindness. The pain often becomes so intense that the rabbit breaks its back trying to get away from it.
  2. The second test is the skin irritation test in which the test animal has an area of its back stripped of fur and the test product repeatedly rubbed into the bare skin causing rash, pain and swelling.
  3. The third test is the LD/50 test (Lethal dose - 50% die). In this test cosmetics are force fed to test animals to determine the amount necessary to cause 50% of them to die in severe agony from such things as organ blockage, toxic reaction, and convulsions.
  4. Fourth is the inhalation test. In this test, animals are sprayed repeatedly in the face for a 2-1/2 hour period, and then killed and their tissues examined.

Remember this when you purchase and use cosmetics of a brand that tests on live animals. I will definately not be purchasing from brands that do this anymore.

Mac, Nars, Bobbi Brown and Barry M do not test on animals. PHEW!!! :)

me being a huge animal lover and vegetarian I stray so far away from certain products...I couldn't even finishing reading that list..always breaks my heart that humans do this to animals.

Thanks for posting this. So many people seem to skip around this issue so it's great when someone addresses it

Even if these company's such as Barry M don't test on animals they probably get their ingredients from company's that do test on animals. You can never fully avoid it.
Its a very nasty thing that they do, and they really shouldn't have to do it any more they should know what they can and cant use by now.

I was vegetarian for many years, but when I was pregnant I couldn’t think only on me…
After my daughter born I continue have a “normal” diet. I also discover the blood type diet and in my blood type I should eat lots of meat and fish, not all the types… the true is that I fell much better, stronger, when I do that type of diet. But I don’t like eat animal, don’t taste good to me. I’ve a child at home and she needs meat and fish, more because she is my blood type, too.
But I’m against any arm cause to any living thing… the way they test products is in volunteers, many brands have in the inside paper how many testes and how many volunteers and results!!!
sorry, so long this....

thanks so much for writing about this. so many girls avoid to know about it, i guess ignorance is bliss nowadays. it's good to remind ourselves from time to time that these horrendous things do happen to animals, and us as humans, are responsible of taking care of them and protecting them, not destroying them.

Hi Everyone,

Bubblegarm, you are a beautiful lady and I enjoy your blog!

Thanks for this informative post. I just wanted to emphasize the point that Tanya.Lou is also making: even if some companies don't have their FINAL products tested on animals they still buy the CORE INGREDIENTS from suppliers who test on animals.
I feel it's important to bear this in mind when purchasing products from companies who claim not to be involved with animal testing.
The good news is that there are LOADS of brands who make sure that none of the ingredients used to make their products have been tested on living creatures -- like LUSH for example, or most organic beauty and makeup articles.

Sorry for the long post, but I think it's so important we don't rely on making animals suffer just so that all us makeup lovers can have our fun :)

I could go on blabbing about diet and clothing but this isn't the place and I don't want to upset anyone -- just motivate all of you to at least be aware of what's going on and make informed purchases! :)

Many good wishes from Paris,

Nadine x

Im doing a report on how people should stop testing products on animals and how bad it is. that list will help me soo much and hopefully convince everyone how aweful it is what they do to animals.

These are cold and cruel wys to test beauty products on animals. These won't save our lives. They're only making the animal's lives worse. Surely there's some other way to test these products without torturing these poor animals. I could barely get through this list. Most people say that it's better animals than humans that go through this but they dont realize the cruelty these poor animals are put through.

Thank you so much for bringing this information to light. I am completely horrified and will be voting with my dollars going forward. Thank you again!
