Hit and miss..

Which is which?

FAIL: I hate Barry M's new instant (311) 'Nail Effects' which is basically a matte black nail polish that cracks once applied on top of another nail polish to reveal a unique design. Yes, the results are instant and it has an "effect" but it's not that great. On my short nails it just looks like chipped and peeled nail polish and I dislike that the results aren't consistent, sometimes it cracks nicely, and sometimes it bubbles up which leads to an uneven texture. Overall, this is a definite miss from me.

SUCCESS: On the other hand I love Barry M's (244) 'Hologram' nail polish which is clear with chunks of small circular glitter that have a multi dimensional shine. It sounds tacky and childish but I really like it layered over the top of paler colours and grey to really make my nails sparkle. One coat delivers roughly 6 sparkles, I like to add 2 layers to really make them stand out. Also, I would like to add that the glitter is easily removed with nail polish remover.

What's your verdict?

I just purchases the Barry M effect nail varnish yesterday and applied it to Dusty Mauve and it looked horrible.

I have seen other bloggers applying it to bright colours like green etc and it looks really nice!

So I'll try that out before I decide =) xx

The first Barry M polish looks literally like a hit nail (gross)...the second one is not my cup of tea, but definitely, much better than the other one!

@rubyrue - I tried it with coral and turqoise but it still looked hideous! :/ It just doesn't work for me, I think closeup photography makes it look better than it really is. Good luck with yours xx

Yep...fail on the first one. Unless you are going for a Halloween look?
Loved the second one. It reminds me of fairy cakes for some reason.

I know some people really don't like Nail Effects but it looks like you've put quite a lot on the nail in this pic and I've found that it works best when you apply quite a thin layer. Maybe try it like that one more time to see if you ike the effect better?

i love the hologram one! the effects?? meh...not feeling it either honestly.

I love my Barry M nail effects hehe I put it over a deep pink and it was really nice. I think it's only a Halloween type product though. Dying to try the hologram one, think i'll have to purchase this weekend :)

I also hate the cracked nail effect. I think ladies just get excited about anything new in the beauty world lol. It looks awful! The glitter on the other hand looks sweet and subtle. I also like that it's easy to remove!

@primp and preen, I tried it that way too but honestly I still feel the same :(

i've seen alot of reviews on this polish and I have heard that OPI are bringing out an 'effects' nail polish too, i can't remember from which collection because I've seen alot of pre release material on OPI collections so maybe the OPI one would be better.

you're right about this nailpolish, it just looks chipped and scratched off. when i first saw the pic, i thought, i wonder why she scratched it off and then took a picture...
when I was in highschool i had a really good nail polish set, you applied the first coat of one colour and then the second coat of a crackle colour and it looked way better than this, i'll rack my brain to remember the brand and then i'll let you know.

also, i'm not a big fan of chunky glitter nail polishes, so they are both a miss for me, unfortunately.

Muhsine said...

@TzeYien89 I should hope so, but if it's a cracking concept then I will not be insterested.

@Asiya LOL I wouldn't intentionally make my nails look like this :) but I am an idiot for buying it. x

I blogged about the Barry M nail effect polish too. I applied it over bright colours, and actually I thought it looked ok.... in the photos. Looking at my nails though it looked messy. I dont like it and havent worn it since :L Great Post! Is the holographic polish still avaliable? I dont think I've ever seen it before :( xxx

I don't have the hologram one but I have the Instant Nail Effects and I love it! I think it's great on bright colours, but does look awful or chipped on dark or neutral colours. If I were you, I'd try bright pinks, greens and yellows before you decide it's rubbish :)

I love the holohram one :) great idea to put it on a lighter coloured nail varnished.. i would have applied it to a darker one to make it stand out more but i like your idea better :) xxx

It sort of reminds of the LE polish which Nails Inc did earlier on this year with Diet coke & Boots it was called LONDON and i loved it but silly me only ever got one :( so on the search for a dupe :) x

Ooo the glitter one is so beautiful with that pale pink underneath! Definitely a hit ;)

oh that nail effect is a serious miss! I have short nails too - and I know the feeling of how things have to be really consistent, otherwise they just look horrible!

Love the other effect though, really pretty - I'm not much into glitter but I may have to try it this year thanks to all the posts by you and @fantastic

Agreed on the black one. HUUUGE miss.. i just dont get it!! xx

I'm not taken by the nail effects polish. I've seen it and passed it by. My polish chips enough all on it's own! The Hologram looks great though. I'll keep an eye out for it.

i have to agree with you--i don't like the crackle effect..it definitely looks like a chipped manicure. i've noticed a lot of people are into that look lately, but to me it just looks messy.

i prefer the glitter--i love that you know how it applies approx 6 pieces per coat ;) x

The trick with the barry m instant effects is how you apply it - it really is a cool nail polish and I love using it! check here for how to use it properly: http://thelittlewelshsbeautybox.blogspot.com/2010/10/barry-m-instant-effects-nail-polish.html

The Barry M polishes that arent a single colour always seem to be a bit weird :S but i do love 'coral' from them xx

OMG I didn't answer, I'm sorry, the pale colour I have on as a base coat is 'Shoreditch' by Nails Inc. :) X
