Out with the old...

Yes, I played around with my skin care again, I always do. As a blogger and a very interested and curious individual I'm always looking for the next best thing which is actually not very healthy. Last week I explored AHA moisturisers and my skin broke out REALLY badly. I am also a picker, I pick and poke at anything that resembles a spot and make it 10X worse. Discussing my frustration with my husband, he suggested I use the moisturiser he's using and stick to it. I chucked all of my never ending skin care products into a bag and out of sight.

Bye bye my loved ones!

In with the new!

The moisturiser my husband uses is by Neutrogena and is the oil free version. I actually purchased it for myself about 3 months ago, used it once and that was that.

Why oil free? Well, up until 2 years ago I never EVER got spots, when I did I started wearing foundation which made it worse. My skin without makeup is normal, however when I wear make up I get a oily t-zone, therefore oil free products without any spot fighting ingredients is great for me, as I don't want my skin to get used to salicylic acid.

I got the oil free face wash and make up remover to match, they are currently on offer for 3 for 2 at Boots. The moisturiser is actually very moisturising and the face wash lathers up nicely. The make up remover is nice but I still feel like I need a eye makeup remover when I wear a lot of make up.

I have wanted to try the Clarisonic but can not justify the price, I got this face brush from the Botanics range at Boots, it's really soft and in my opinion does the same thing. It works really well with the face wash...

I am currently using the Garnier grape water eye makeup remover which I have repurchased a few times, it's gentle and effective.

My overflowing skin care box is now filled with what I need. It actually feels quite liberating.

Sometimes you have to put your faith in to science (in my case Neutrogena) as natural isn't always best.

Have you tried this oil free range, if so what do you think?

From now on....

  • I will stick to this regimen for 2 months solid even if my skin goes bananas.
  • I will not pick and squeeze at my spots even if they are shouting at me!

My advice? Stick to what works for you and don't experiment!

So true! I used to use all types of products thinking I was helping my skin and the "newest and latest" product would improve my skin! My skin only suffered and became worse! I now stick to what I know and what works.. I use Murad acne products! they are wonderful and gentle on your skin, yet so effective! And my face feels baby smooth!I hope your new regimen works! All the best! xx

I haven't tried any of these but I absolutely LOVE Neutrogena skincare products. I always repurchase their 2 in 1 wash/mask and exfoliating wash from their Visibly Clear range. It's the number one skincare brand for me as it's never let me down!

@Riham It's an addiction :) X

@Une tasse that's good to know :)

I agree! Great post. I bought the sephora collection face brush and I'm sure it works the same. I use proactiv and a few burt's bees products. (I need to make a post) Everyone tells me this and that about proactiv, but it works for me and I'll stick to it! :)

Muhsine said...

@Tanisa i tried pro activ too, I think it's great but can be drying when used only on its own. x

I use Neutrogena Oil-free lotion for combination skin and Purpose soap-free wash. My skin has cleared of all acne except at those girly times and I looove this combination as it has the perfect pH balance. Good luck with your new regimen!

I have the oil-free moisturise but I don't use it consistently enough to know how it impacts me skin! Doh!

I used that moisturiser for a very long time and it was brilliant perfect base for make up too very light. I now either still use that one or I use the Clean & Clear oil free moisturiser. My skin is bad at the moment so I need to stick to a regimen too :S will definately be purchasing that facial brush! Do post at let us know how it works! x x x

I love to experiment, but after a terrible allergic reaction and not being able to leave the house for a week, I rarely switch. My face was raw and covered in tiny bumps- terrible! I find that the less ingredients and less complicated, the better. I just use Clean and Clear Sensitive Wash, Witch Hazel, and Jojoba Oil to remove makeup. Neutrogena Sunscreen in the AM and sometimes I use Olay night cream if I am feeling dry.

sounds like a great routine :) i hope you can stick with it for a bit! i would love to hear the results :) i always go for the more natural organic products but like you said i think somtimes you just need to trust science!

oh my goodness, i'm the same way! i currently have 3 moisturizers and want to buy another. i have a problem; truly, i do :p.

also, i tried an AHA/BHA cleanser once and it gave me such a horrible reaction, as well. i'm steering clear of those from now on!

Good on you GIRRRL.. I find it hard not to experiment but agree that I need to sort through my skin care cupboard.. [YEP CUPBOARD!] Maybe I should call you round your good haha.. we have to meet up soon hun xxxx

Looks like a great plan! I hardly use anything on my skin anymore and it helps, will occasionally use benzac on my spots, sometimes my neutrogena pink grapefruit face cleanser and Paula's choice BHA. Most of the time it's just warm water and a microfibre cloth :)

I see you're doing away with Ceptaphil but thats my fav facial wash product.

I know what you mean... I'm sucha bad picker :( but it's such a bad habit. I stick to Olay for now... see how it goes :-)

Good luck! Hope your skin gets better.

And I don't think I've ever seen those Neutrogen products or the Garnier makeup remover! I saw a cleanser that looks similar to the one you have here in canada but it has a different name

I've used the moisturiser and quite liked it but didn't repurchase it as I found that I had to use A LOT which resulted in it finishing quickly. Maybe I just have a big face? =(

Hope this stuff works for you! x

Muhsine said...

Thanks girls for your comments, I'm glad some of you have tried the products and have positive feedback, all is good. :)

@Mouldy Fruit - Yes we should meet up again, deffo :)

@Sana I hardly use any of the cream, I find it's quite creamy so a little goes a long way. I think
it's just preference.

A lot of your chucked products are ones that I've used this year too (the Burts Bees Orange face wash, Bio-Oil and Cetaphil).

I've had quite a skin product round-about this year...I think there is a certain chemistry to it - if you mess with the combination, it's hard to get back to nice skin!

I had FINALLY figured out a routine that worked for me...but I made a couple of product switches and lifestyle changes - and since then - those products don't work for me anymore.

I went to a facialist - and spent $400 on facials and new skin care (Dermalogica and Yon-ka) but my skin was still far from flawless.

I tried to get my skin care back to the products that USED to work for me - did that patiently for 2 months - but still have problem skin.

Instead of wasting any more time or money, I've booked an appointment with a dermatologist. Hope he's able to help me!

I recently did the same with my skin care!
All the crap out, and a solid system in place is the best feeling :)

I hope the new skincare routine really works! I have tried very few products from Neutrogena.
I am also a picker, especially when I am nervous or stressed.

I am a big fan of neutrogena. If i dont use natural I use Neutrogena and/or garnier!! x

Rhamnousia @ Desi Girl Does Makeup said...

I wish I could do the same.

It seems that whatever I seem to like and works for my skin always ends up being discontinued.

I had a perfect toner and it was d/c'd so now I have to find one that works just as well.

I have found my favourite moisturiser and that does me well enough!

I have never used Neutrogena skincare after using a makeup remover than nigh on blinded me but for some reason I really want the grapefruit face wash.

I'm using the same make-up remover (Garnier) and I love it so far! I have never tried Neutrogena products....I'm actually looking for a new moisturizer and a face wash. For some reason I've started breaking up a lot lately and I don't know what's causing it.

Hope these work for you. Most oil-free moisturisers I try leave my skin feeling dry & tight. I always have breakouts but yet my skin is quite dry - it's maddening!

Thats funny, Ive just done something really really similar and posted it on my blog too. I felt my skin was rebelling against all the (very lovely and often expensive) products I was using on it so I decided to go back to the Neutrogena clean and clear 2 in 1 face wash / mask and a couple of other neutrogena products I used to use years ago and banish all other (lovely, sob!) products until my skin is looking decent again.
Hope these work for you. Neautrogena is a pretty good brand so im sure it will

Oh I like the new look of your skincare drawer! :) I want to buy a brush like this, as I can't afford/justify a clarisonic! :)

I love the garnier eye make-up remover, I've been using it for years and have never found anything better. Also a fan of Neutrogena too, your hubby is right! :) xxx

im addicted to skin care. I have really sensitive skin so I don't have that many options left! I never used to take care of my skin before, and it was perfect - no blemish in site. After I started dabbling in skincare I've gotten spots, redness and so on! I hate it! I'm trying to avoid products containing Sodium Laureth Sulphate - apparently it causes inflammation and is generally bad for the skin. I'm just going to avoid using lots of products now and take it easy :) Great post xx

rotating products can definitely wreak havoc on skin. It's good to try one new product at a time, and give it time to work.
Unfortunately I can't use that neutrogena cleanser; it's way too harsh and drying for my skin. I haven't found any Neutrogena product I could use, but I wish I could since I need something cheap and everything that works for me is so expensive :-(

you're way more in control that I am :) I could never chuck all my stuff, I can't help but experiment. Although I think I've narrowed it down to a manageable routine these days.

Looking forward to your updates on the new routine

Ruthless! Good work! :)

my sister uses this range, so i use it on the odd occasion if i'm at her place. otherwise, i've gone back to the basics too...and i'm so happy that i have! the results are much better, and it's less complicated :)

Great post, makes me realise that I need to stop treating my skincare routine (especially the cleansing and exfoliating part) as a ..work in progress and only stick to the products that give me the best results!!

Btw, we use the same eye makeup remover, I really love this one since it's extremely affordable and effective (and I go through those bottles like noone's business)!

I've been using the same skin care products for a year now. Just a face wash and a AHA moisturizer (which I'm really sad it didn't work for you, for me works wonders) I'll change it up maybe in the end of the years just because my skin it's getting used to it... But you're right, skin care it's almost an addiction! We just have to be strong :P

Great post :) I actually have the oil-free moisturiser and really like it. Whenever my skin is going wild and I'm spotty I tend to use this to calm it down. When I bought the moisturiser I also bought their Daily Srub for blackheads, not sure if youve seen this. I used it for soild for 3 weeks but it just seemed to bring me out in breakouts, I know thats probably deep cleansing my skin but how long do you normally use a product before you say 'LOOK' this isnt working??
LOve the idea of the brush, have you seen Avons Tallow Wood Facial Massager?

I have that moisturiser - I think it's amazing! I bought the make-up remover but I didn't like it... It was too thick for me.

Hope you get on OK!
